An automotive chatbot answers a car shopper's first message in seconds, works from your live inventory, qualifies on budget, trade-in and timeline, and books the test drive. Every vendor in the category agrees on that description. Where they stop agreeing is the invoice.

We checked nine vendor websites first-hand in August 2026: Impel, Conversica, Gubagoo, Matador, Numa, Podium, Fullpath, BDC.AI and our own. Exactly one of them publishes a price. Impel, Conversica, Gubagoo, Matador and Fullpath return a 404 on their pricing URLs entirely. Podium keeps a pricing page but prints no numbers on it, only "talk to our sales team for details." BDC.AI is the lone exception, listing pricing from $595 per month on its homepage. Everyone else routes you to a demo before you learn what the line item costs.

That matters more in automotive than in most categories, because dealership technology is usually sold per rooftop with an annual commitment, and a GM comparing four vendors cannot build a budget out of four demo requests. MessageAgent takes the other approach: three flat tiers at $79, $199 and $499 a month, published in dollars, with text, web chat, email, Instagram and Messenger on one bill and carrier fees passed through at cost. We are equally direct about the trade. We are the conversation layer, not a DMS or a CRM, we do not place outbound phone calls, and we do not write deals back into CDK or Reynolds. If those are requirements, several vendors in the table below fit you better than we do.

Side by side

Automotive chatbot and AI BDC vendors compared

We opened all nine of these vendor websites in August 2026 and looked for a published price. Only one had one. Where a pricing URL returned a 404 or a demo form, the table says so rather than guessing.

Vendor What it is Published price Channels Best for
MessageAgent One AI agent across messaging channels, with a light CRM Yes. Flat $79, $199 and $499 per month in USD Text, web chat, email, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp Independent and used-car dealers who sell over text and chat and want a readable price
Impel Sales AI, Service AI, Chat AI, Marketing AI and Merchandising AI modules No. The pricing URL returns a 404 and the site routes to a demo Chat, text, email, plus merchandising media Franchise groups wanting one vendor across sales, service and merchandising
Conversica Long-running AI agents that chase and re-engage leads No. The pricing URL returns a 404 and the site routes to a demo Email-led, plus SMS, chat and messaging apps Large groups whose main gap is persistent lead follow-up
Gubagoo Dealership chat and digital retailing, owned by Reynolds and Reynolds since 2021 No. The pricing URL returns a 404 Web chat, text, video, Messenger Rooftops already standardized on Reynolds and Reynolds
Matador Automotive-native AI agents with deep DMS and CRM sync No. The pricing URL returns a 404 and the site routes to a demo Text, voice, web chat, email, one omnichannel inbox Dealers who need two-way sync with VinSolutions, CDK, eLead or Tekion
Numa Voice-first AI operating system, strongest in the service drive No pricing published anywhere on the site Phone, text, unified inbox Service departments drowning in inbound calls
Podium Messaging, reviews and an AI agent, sold well beyond automotive No. It keeps a pricing page but prints no numbers, only "talk to our sales team" Text, web chat, social, reviews Dealers who want reputation management bundled with messaging
Fullpath Customer data platform plus an agentic CRM, 200+ system integrations No. The pricing URL returns a 404 and the site routes to a demo Email, SMS, web personalization, ads Groups whose real problem is unifying dealership data, not chat
BDC.AI Outsourced-BDC replacement sold as an AI BDC Yes. Pricing from $595 per month, stated on the homepage Text, phone, email Dealers explicitly replacing an outsourced BDC contract

What you get

Everything one AI agent handles

1

A price you can budget before the demo

Nine vendors checked, one published price. Ours are on the pricing page: $79, $199 and $499 a month. A GM can put the line item in next year's budget without sitting through four discovery calls first, which in dealership software is genuinely unusual.

2

No per-conversation or per-rooftop meter

Most of this category prices per rooftop with an annual commitment, and the AI vendors outside automotive increasingly meter per resolution. A flat tier means a strong sales month does not produce a surprise invoice, and adding a second store does not automatically double the software line.

3

Answers from your live inventory

Availability, mileage, trim, options, warranty status. The AI answers from your inventory feed on whichever channel the shopper used, so the 9pm question about the used Highlander gets a real answer at 9pm instead of a callback form.

4

Covers the hours your BDC does not

Auto shoppers submit the same inquiry to four or five dealerships in one evening and buy from whoever answers first. Nights, weekends and the Saturday rush are exactly when leads arrive and staff are unavailable, and that is the gap an always-on agent closes.

5

Compliant texting out of the box

AI is disclosed on every conversation, opt-out handling and 10DLC registration are built in, and the agent is configured never to quote a payment, a rate or a trade value. It gathers the inputs and hands the customer to a person for numbers that need a desk.

6

Honest about what it is not

We are a conversation layer, not a DMS, a CRM or a digital retailing tool. We do not dial out and we do not write deals back into CDK or Reynolds. If native DMS writeback or outbound voice is a hard requirement, Matador or Numa will serve you better than we will.

Common questions

Automotive chatbot questions

What is the best chatbot for car dealers?

There is no single best one, because the category splits by where your leads actually arrive. If they come through your website and third-party listings, a site-led chat vendor like Gubagoo or Impel fits. If your bottleneck is the phone and the service drive, Numa is voice-first. If most of your inquiries land in text and social DMs and you want a published price, that is the case for MessageAgent. Match the vendor to your channel mix rather than to a feature list.

How much does an automotive chatbot cost?

Almost nobody in the category will tell you before a demo. We checked nine vendor sites in August 2026 and only BDC.AI published a figure, listing pricing from $595 per month. Impel, Conversica, Gubagoo, Matador and Fullpath return a 404 on their pricing URLs, and Podium keeps a pricing page with no numbers on it. MessageAgent publishes flat tiers at $79, $199 and $499 a month instead.

What is an AI BDC for car dealerships?

An AI BDC is software that does the work a business development center does: responding to internet leads within seconds, qualifying the shopper, following up on the ones who go quiet, and booking sales or service appointments. It runs around the clock across text, chat and sometimes phone. The term is a positioning label rather than a technical category, so ask any vendor using it which channels it actually covers.

Is an AI BDC cheaper than an outsourced BDC?

Usually yes on the software line, though the honest comparison is not like for like. An outsourced BDC is staffed by people who can negotiate, read hesitation and handle exceptions. AI handles the repetitive first layer at a fraction of the headcount cost but escalates anything requiring judgment. Most dealers who switch keep a smaller internal team and use AI for volume, rather than eliminating the function outright.

Can an automotive chatbot answer questions about specific inventory?

Yes, if it is connected to your inventory feed. That connection is the main thing separating a useful dealership chatbot from a generic website widget. A connected agent answers whether a specific VIN is still available, what the mileage and trim are, and whether a particular option is on the car. An unconnected one collects a name and a phone number and nothing more.

Can a car dealership chatbot book service appointments?

Yes, and for many stores the service drive is where it pays for itself faster than sales. It answers hours, pricing ranges for common jobs, recall and warranty questions, offers real openings against your scheduling calendar, confirms the visit, and sends a reminder to cut no-shows. Numa built its whole product around this side of the dealership.

Do automotive chatbots integrate with CDK, Reynolds, VinSolutions or Tekion?

The automotive-native vendors do. Matador advertises two-way sync with DealerSocket, VinSolutions, CDK, eLead, Reynolds and Reynolds and Tekion among more than sixty integrations, and Fullpath claims over 200 dealership system connections. Cross-industry messaging platforms, MessageAgent included, generally do not write back into a DMS. If deal and RO writeback is a requirement, ask for it by name in the demo.

What is conversational AI for used car dealerships?

It is the same technology pointed at harder questions. Used inventory is one of one: this specific mileage, this service history, this trim, this set of options, none of it fully captured in a listing. Conversational AI working off a live used-car feed answers those unit-specific questions in seconds, which matters more on used lots than new, where shoppers can compare identical stock across dealers.

Are dealership chatbots compliant with TCPA text rules?

They can be, but compliance is a configuration question, not a feature checkbox. Texting a consumer for marketing purposes requires prior express written consent, every message thread needs working opt-out handling, and US numbers sending application-to-person traffic must be registered under 10DLC. Ask any vendor how it captures consent, how it processes a stop request, and who registers the campaign.

How fast can a dealership chatbot go live?

A messaging-layer deployment is usually days: connect the channels, point it at your inventory feed, write the qualifying questions, and test it against real shopper questions before it goes live. Platforms that sync deeply into a DMS or CRM take longer, often several weeks, because the integration and data mapping have to be built and validated on your store's configuration.
