A car dealership website AI agent is software that holds a real conversation with a shopper on your site, in a text message or in a Facebook or Instagram DM, answers what they asked about a specific vehicle, works out whether they are a buyer, and puts a test drive on the calendar. It is not a menu of buttons. The difference between an AI agent and the old dealership chatbot is that the agent reads your inventory feed and your store's rules, then decides what to say, instead of matching a keyword to a canned reply.
Dealers ask what this costs before anything else, and the honest answer is that most of the category will not tell you. On 19 August 2026 we opened the pricing page of eight dealership AI vendors. Six publish nothing at all. Podium publishes $399 and $599 a month plus a stack of per-number and per-location fees. BDC.AI says pricing begins at $595 a month. Our plans are $79, $199 and $499 a month, flat, and the table below shows exactly what we found on each vendor's own site.
Side by side
What dealership AI vendors actually publish: eight pricing pages, checked on one day
Every figure below was read first-hand from the vendor's own US site on 19 August 2026. Where a row says no published price, that is what we found: either the pricing URL returned a 404, or the page loaded with no dollar figure on it. Vendors change pricing, so treat this as a dated snapshot and confirm before you sign.
| Vendor | Publishes a price? | Published US price | Extra fees found on the page | Billing unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MessageAgent | Yes, on the site | $79, $199 and $499 per month | None from us. Carrier and Meta fees pass through at cost | Flat monthly plan with a conversation allowance |
| Podium | Yes, in full | Core $399/mo, Pro $599/mo, Signature custom | $5 per extra number, $5/mo 10DLC per US location, $500 network optimization fee per location, phone seats $30 (1 to 4 users) or $25 (5+) | Per location, per month, plus seats and numbers |
| BDC.AI | Yes, one number | From $595 per month | None stated. The figure sits on the homepage; /pricing returns a 404 | Per month, per rooftop |
| Impel | No | No published price | Pricing URL returned a 404 | Not disclosed |
| Conversica | No | No published price | Pricing URL returned a 404 | Not disclosed |
| Fullpath | No | No published price | Pricing URL returned a 404 | Not disclosed |
| Matador | No | No published price | Pricing URL returned a 404 | Not disclosed |
| Numa | No | No published price | Pricing page loads but carries no dollar figure | Not disclosed |
Read first-hand on 19 August 2026 from podium.com/pricing, bdc.ai, impel.ai, conversica.com, fullpath.com, matador.ai and numa.com. Podium's AI Concierge sits on the Pro tier at $599. A 404 on a pricing URL is not evidence that a vendor is expensive, only that you will have to sit through a demo to find out.
What you get
Everything one AI agent handles
It answers the question about that VIN
A shopper looking at a 2022 Tacoma wants to know the mileage, whether it has the tow package, and what the payment looks like with $3,000 down. The agent reads the inventory record for that vehicle and answers, rather than telling them a salesperson will be in touch. That is the moment most dealership sites lose the lead.
A price you can put in next year's budget
Six of the eight vendors we checked will not print a number. Ours are $79, $199 and $499 a month, and nothing moves because a good month sent more shoppers to the site. No per-lead fee, no per-resolution meter, no network optimization charge per rooftop.
Qualification before the handoff
The agent asks the questions your BDC would ask: timeframe, trade, financing or cash, new or used, which store. By the time a human opens the conversation, the notes are already written and the salesperson knows whether this is a Saturday appointment or a follow-up in March.
It books into a real calendar slot
Booking is the whole point. The agent offers open times, confirms the appointment, and sends the reminder that stops the no-show. Test drives that get scheduled inside the conversation show up far more often than ones that need a callback to arrange.
The same agent on every channel a shopper uses
Shoppers start on the VDP, then text, then message the store's Facebook page at nine at night. One agent covers website chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, and the thread stays in one place instead of scattering across three tools.
Honest about what we are not
We are not a voice product. If you want an AI agent that picks up the phone, that is a different category and we do not sell it. We are not a DMS or a CRM either. We are the messaging layer that talks to shoppers and hands qualified, booked appointments to whatever your store already runs.

Common questions
Car dealership AI agent questions
What is a car dealership AI agent?
A car dealership AI agent is software that conducts an unscripted conversation with a shopper across your website, text messages and social DMs. It reads your live inventory, answers questions about specific vehicles, trade-ins and financing, qualifies the shopper on timeframe and budget, and books a test drive. Unlike a rules-based chatbot, it generates answers rather than matching keywords to canned replies.
How much does an AI agent for a car dealership cost?
Most vendors do not say. On 19 August 2026 we checked eight dealership AI pricing pages: six published no price at all. Podium lists $399 and $599 per month plus per-number and per-location fees, BDC.AI states pricing begins at $595 per month, and our plans are $79, $199 and $499 per month. Expect a demo call before you get a number from most of the category.
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot for car dealers?
A chatbot follows a decision tree someone drew in advance, so it can only handle the paths that were built. An AI agent is given your inventory, your store policies and a goal, then works out what to say and which action to take. Practically, the agent can answer a question nobody anticipated about a specific VIN; the chatbot hands that conversation to a form.
Can an AI agent answer inventory questions on my dealership website?
Yes, provided it can read your inventory feed. Once connected, the agent can answer mileage, trim, options, availability and rough payment questions on any vehicle on the lot, and can tell a shopper when a car has already sold. Accuracy depends entirely on how fresh the feed is, so a nightly or real-time feed matters more than the model behind it.
Will an AI agent replace my BDC?
Not for most stores. It replaces the first response and the follow-up chasing, which is the part BDC staff do least reliably at nine at night and on Sundays. The people work the appointments that come out of it. Dealers who cut the whole department usually find that the hard conversations, the ones with a trade problem or a credit issue, still need a person.
Does an AI agent work for used car dealerships?
Yes, and independents often see more from it than franchise stores do, because they have fewer people covering more hours. Used inventory changes constantly, so the feed connection matters even more. The qualification questions differ too: on used vehicles the agent should be asking about the trade and the down payment early, since financing is where most used deals stall.
Can the AI agent book a test drive?
Yes. The agent offers the open slots on your calendar, confirms the one the shopper picks, writes it into the calendar, and sends a reminder text before the appointment. Booking inside the conversation is the single biggest lift, because every handoff to a callback loses shoppers who have already moved on to the next dealer's site.
Does an AI agent integrate with my dealership CRM?
It should send the contact, the transcript, the qualification answers and the booked appointment into whatever your store already uses. We connect to Salesforce directly and to most other systems through Zapier, which covers the common CRM and calendar targets. We are not a DMS integration and we do not write deals, so ask any vendor to demonstrate the specific write-back you need.
Is texting shoppers from an AI agent compliant?
In the US you need 10DLC brand and campaign registration before you send business texts at volume, plus consent and a working opt-out. That is a requirement of the carriers and of the TCPA, not of any one vendor. Note that Podium charges $5 per month per location for the base 10DLC fee; ours is included, and the agent honors STOP automatically.
What is the best AI agent for car dealers?
It depends on what you are buying. If you want phone coverage, look at the voice vendors, because we do not do voice. If you want text, chat and social DMs answered instantly with published, predictable pricing, that is what we built. If you want a single platform that also runs reviews and payments, Podium covers more ground at $399 to $599 a month plus fees.
