Help Scout vs Zendesk pricing comes down to two numbers. On seats, Zendesk is cheaper for email-only support ($19 per agent a month against Help Scout's $25, billed yearly), but once you add live chat and the social channels, Help Scout Standard at $25 undercuts Zendesk Suite Team at $55 by $30 per agent per month. On AI, Help Scout charges $0.75 per resolution with nothing included, while Zendesk includes 5 to 15 resolutions per agent each month and then charges $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go. For most US teams of 5 to 25 agents, Help Scout costs less.
Help Scout prices were read on helpscout.com/pricing on 8 October 2026 on both billing cycles. Zendesk prices were read on zendesk.com/pricing the same day, including the plan data the page loads for its comparison table, and on Zendesk's help center article on resolution allowances. US dollars, before taxes, phone usage and carrier fees.

Is Help Scout cheaper than Zendesk?
For most teams, yes. The exception is a team that only answers email and never plans to add chat. Zendesk Support Team at $19 per agent billed yearly is the cheapest paid seat on either rate card, and it covers email ticketing, routing, macros and automations. Help Scout's cheapest paid seat is $25.
The picture flips as soon as you want live chat or the Meta channels. Help Scout puts live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on Standard at $25. Zendesk puts messaging and live chat on Suite Team at $55. That is a $30 gap per agent per month, or $3,600 a year for a ten-person team, before either vendor's AI is switched on.
| Team, billed yearly | Help Scout Standard | Help Scout Plus | Zendesk Support Team | Zendesk Suite Team | Zendesk Suite Professional |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 agents | $125 | $225 | $95 | $275 | $575 |
| 10 agents | $250 | $450 | $190 | $550 | $1,150 |
| 25 agents | $625 | $1,125 | $475 | $1,375 | $2,875 |
Two caveats sit under that table. Help Scout Standard stops at 25 users, so the 26th hire moves everyone to Plus at $45, and Help Scout Pro bills at least 10 users, so it never costs less than $750 a month. Zendesk prints no seat cap or minimum on its plan cards. If you expect to cross 25 agents within the contract term, price Help Scout Plus, not Standard. Our Help Scout pricing breakdown walks through every seat cliff and add-on.
How much does Zendesk AI cost compared with Help Scout AI Answers?
Per resolution, Zendesk costs twice as much as Help Scout on a committed volume ($1.50 against $0.75) and about 2.7 times as much pay as you go ($2.00). Zendesk offsets part of that with an allowance: 5 automated resolutions per agent per month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, and 15 on Enterprise, capped at 10,000 a year. Help Scout includes none after its 3-month free trial.
Both vendors define a resolution the same narrow way, which is worth knowing because it protects you. Zendesk bills only when the AI agent resolves the request without any escalation to a human. Help Scout bills only when the customer gets an AI reply and does not escalate, search the knowledge base, ask more questions or press "I still need help", and it charges one resolution per conversation however many questions get answered.
So which meter is cheaper depends on how hard you lean on the AI. A little algebra on the two rate cards gives a clean rule. At $1.50, Zendesk's AI costs less than Help Scout's while your team resolves fewer than 10 conversations per agent per month with AI on a Team plan, or fewer than 20 per agent on Suite Professional. Above that, Help Scout's $0.75 meter wins, and the gap widens with every resolution. Pay as you go at $2.00, the crossover drops to 8 per agent on Team plans.
| 10 agents, AI resolutions a month | Help Scout AI Answers | Zendesk Suite Team, committed | Zendesk Suite Team, pay as you go | Zendesk Suite Professional, committed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | $75 | $75 | $100 | $0 (within the 100 included) |
| 500 | $375 | $675 | $900 | $600 |
| 1,000 | $750 | $1,425 | $1,900 | $1,350 |
| 2,000 | $1,500 | $2,925 | $3,900 | $2,850 |
One more thing to watch on the Zendesk side. Its help center now describes a newer model called resolution allowances, a dollar pool included in the plan price at $2 per seat per month on Team plans, $5 on Suite Professional and $10 on Suite Enterprise, with a maximum of $5,000 a year. Zendesk says it will give 30 days notice before moving an existing account to the new tiers, and the per-resolution prices under that model are quoted by sales, not printed. If you sign in the next few months, ask your rep in writing which model your contract uses. Our Zendesk AI pricing breakdown covers the older per-resolution model in full.
What a 10-agent US support team actually pays
Take a realistic case: ten agents answering email, live chat and Instagram, with the AI resolving 500 conversations a month once the trial ends, billed yearly.
- Help Scout Standard: $250 in seats plus $375 in AI Answers, $625 a month.
- Help Scout Plus, if you need native SMS, HubSpot or Salesforce in the sidebar, or round robin routing: $450 plus $375, $825 a month.
- Zendesk Suite Team, the cheapest Zendesk plan with live chat: $550 plus $675 committed, $1,225 a month, or $1,450 pay as you go.
- Zendesk Suite Professional, for skills-based routing and an IVR: $1,150 plus $600, $1,750 a month.
On that workload Help Scout costs roughly half of Zendesk at the comparable tier. Zendesk earns its premium in places the price table does not show well: telephony on the same platform, an IVR phone tree on Professional, skills-based routing, a sandbox and approval workflows on Enterprise, and a larger marketplace of integrations. If your agents also hand work to other departments, a dedicated tool for routing every ticket, lead and request to the right person can cover that without moving everyone up to Suite Professional just for routing rules.
Help Scout vs Zendesk for small business: which should you buy?
- Email only, small team, tight budget. Zendesk Support Team at $19. It is the cheapest real help desk seat on either rate card.
- Email plus chat and social, 3 to 25 agents. Help Scout Standard or Plus. You get the channels at $25 to $45 instead of $55, and the AI meter costs half as much per resolution.
- Phone is a core channel, or you need IVR and skills-based routing. Zendesk Suite Team or Professional. Help Scout handles calls only through integrations.
- Healthcare or SSO requirements on a small team. Compare carefully. Help Scout Pro includes HIPAA compliance and SSO but bills at least 10 users ($750 a month), so a five-person clinic pays for ten seats.
When neither help desk is the right buy
Both products are help desks first: an inbox your agents work, with AI added on a meter. Some teams do not need that. If most of your conversations are sales and booking questions arriving by text, WhatsApp, Instagram and web chat (a clinic, a home services company, a dealership, a property manager), what you are really buying is an AI that answers, qualifies and books without waiting for a person.
That is what MessageAgent is built for. Growth is $199 a month, or $99 billed yearly, with 5,000 AI conversations, 10 handoff seats and SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, web chat and email in one inbox, with no per-resolution meter. At 500 AI resolutions a month, the AI alone costs $375 on Help Scout and $675 on Zendesk Suite Team. It is not a replacement for a full ticketing help desk with a knowledge base and custom reporting, and if your team lives in email tickets, Help Scout or Zendesk is the better buy. If your problem is leads messaging at 9pm and nobody answering until morning, try the demo at the top of this page with a real customer question, then see our plans and pricing or the Help Scout alternative comparison.
Help Scout vs Zendesk pricing questions
Does Zendesk have a free plan?
No. Zendesk offers a 14-day trial of Suite Professional and a startup program with a 6-month Suite trial for up to 50 agents. Help Scout has a permanent Free plan for 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site with 100 contacts a month, plus 15-day trials of Standard and Plus with no credit card.
Which is cheaper billed monthly, Help Scout or Zendesk?
Help Scout at every comparable tier except email-only. Month to month, Help Scout is $30, $54 and $90 per user, and Zendesk is $25 for Support Team, $69 for Suite Team and $149 for Suite Professional. Zendesk's yearly discount is larger (20 to 24 percent against Help Scout's 16.7 percent), so committing narrows the gap slightly.
Is Zendesk worth the extra cost over Help Scout?
It is when phone support, IVR, skills-based routing or a large app marketplace matter to your operation. For an email, chat and social team of under 25 agents, the extra $30 per agent per month for Suite Team, plus a per-resolution AI rate twice as high, is hard to justify on features alone.
Can I switch from Zendesk to Help Scout?
Yes, and the cheapest moment is your Zendesk renewal date, because annual plans are paid up front and you would otherwise pay for two tools at once. Start the Help Scout trial a few weeks before renewal, and use its 3-month free AI Answers window to measure your real resolution volume before the $0.75 meter starts.
